Toll extension 2018

On 1 July 2018, the toll requirement was extended to all federal trunk roads. Here, you can find up-to-date information on the topic.

All federal highways are subject to toll

Since 1 July 2018, the truck toll has applied to all federal trunk roads. The German government thereby aims to improve the financing of federal motorways and trunk roads and guarantee a modern, safe and efficient traffic infrastructure in Germany. For this reason, the user financing needs to be supported.

With the extension, the federal toll system has grown to around 52,000 kilometres of motorways and federal trunk roads.

Be prepared with the OBU

Customers already registered with Toll Collect and whose trucks are equipped with an on-board unit (OBU) require no further action for the toll network expansion and are fully prepared. Automatic toll collection via an on-board unit offers clear advantages for customers. Drivers can change their route at any time without cancelling or partially cancelling their current route. This provides flexibility and saves companies time and money on a daily basis.

The expansion of the toll road network means that many more companies will be using the toll system. Companies that will join the toll system starting in 2018 should decide in advance how they want to pay the fee. For companies that frequently use toll roads, it is best to pay tolls using automatic log-on via an on-board unit.

These companies should register online via the Toll Collect customer portal in order to have an OBU installed. Vehicles can then be registered. Next, the company visits a service partner who will install the OBU. Toll Collect provides the unit free of charge and the company pays for the installation.

Log-on via the OBU may also be a good alternative for customers who previously used manual log-on for toll collection. Therefore companies should stay informed and act as soon as possible.

New OBU screen

The On-Board Units have been gradually prepared for toll on all federal trunk roads. Neither the transport companies nor the truck drivers had to do anything at all. The updated OBUs have a new screen on the display. Now, during the journey, the display shows the number of axles, the abbreviation DE (if the truck is travelling in Germany) and the weight class.

Log-on via the app

The app is available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone from February 2018. It can be downloaded from the app stores.

Routes can be logged on from the road with ease using the app on a smartphone or tablet. Prior registration with Toll Collect is not necessary. Registered Toll Collect customers can also use their customer portal access data for the app. This means that you will also be able to use the app to access your vehicle data from the portal.

As an unregistered customer, you can create a log-on account. This allows you to save vehicles and routes in the app and also for logging on at the terminal and online.

New online log-on

The new online log-on has replaced the Internet Reservation System.

Access data for the Internet Reservation System are therefore no longer valid. Instead, registered customers can use their access data for the Toll Collect customer portal. Customers who do not have access to the portal yet can request the codes to activate their account using the contact form.

What's new is that non-registered customers can also log on online. You can also use any internet-capable device.

Online log-on is supported by the most widely used browsers.

New toll terminals

1,100 new toll terminal supplement the log-on via the internet and the app. The terminals are in Germany and along the border in neighbouring countries. The terminals are located close to junctions, at truck stops, at service areas and service stations.

What is new is that routes can be logged on and cancelled across all log-on options. This means, for example, that a route logged on at a terminal can now be cancelled via the app or the online log-on method.

The old toll terminals were deactivated in May 2018. Log-on is no longer possible on these terminals.

Updates in enforcement

Around 600 enforcement pillars enforce compliance with the toll requirement on the federal trunk roads – in addition to mobile enforcement. Many of the blue pillars, almost four metres high, have already been installed.
